Principal's Message

Principal's Welcome

Dear John Muir Language Academy Staff, Students, Families and Community,

It is with great excitement that I write this letter of introduction to you as the new Principal of John Muir Language Academy. I am honored to have the opportunity to lead a school with such persevering students, an extremely dedicated staff, and a supportive school community. I feel very fortunate to be part of this school and to support the staff, students, and families. My official start date at John Muir is Monday January 4, but Area Superintendent Hazel and I are working hard this month to make for a smooth transition.

The 2019-2020 school year marks my 15th year in education. Since graduating from the University of California Los Angeles with my credential and Masters degree, I have worked with students ranging in age from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade in a variety of roles. I have taught in a Dual Language School grades 1 thru 5, worked as a Title I and Title III Coordinator, was an Elementary Instructional Specialist, worked as a Central Office Family Engagement Resource Teacher and held the role of Principal in both LAUSD and SDUSD. Since leaving San Diego Unified where I held the role of Executive Director, Family & Community Engagement, I have worked in the roles of Director of Parent and Student Engagement of Centralia Elementary School District and Director of School Transformation Family Engagement at The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. And on a personal note, in 2019 I began my journey as a Doctoral candidate at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education.

Although I have always enjoyed central office leadership roles, it is in my position as a principal where I have been most fulfilled in my life’s work. The elementary and middle principalship provides me the chance to work collaboratively with teachers on a daily basis, while also remaining connected to young students learning and growing in the classroom. I firmly believe that every child can excel and that the partnership between home and school builds confidence in students to use their skills in a way that will shape their future and the future of our community.

My conversations with district staff, families and community over the last few weeks have brought me privileged insights into the core beliefs and values of the John Muir community. With my goal of continuing the tradition of excellence here at John Muir Language Academy, I am committed to always exploring new ways to meet the needs of each and every student and to grow in our communication with families and community members.

I view education as a life-long process and expect that I will continue to learn much more about the John Muir community this year and in the years to come. I am excited to unite my experience, my openness to learn, and my student-centered approach to support all students. I look forward to meeting you in the new year!

To our students, I cannot wait to meet you all! I hope that you are excited for the remainder of this school year and that you stay safe over the Winter Break. This break is a perfect time to pick up as many books as possible and to read with your family and friends. I hope to see you all in January when I pop my head into your virtual classrooms.

In closing, please know that I am always available to meet with you, via Zoom of course. I heartily welcome your conversation and positive input throughout the remainder of the year. Let us always keep our students the primary focus of our work. I look forward to celebrating our collective successes this school year.

In service of families and students,

Mr. Stanley Anjan
