Principal's Message

2021 - 2022 Principal's Message

Estudiantes y familias/ Parents and Students,

I am extremely excited to welcome you to the 2021 -2022 school year at John Muir Language Academy, Spanish Immersion K-8!  There are many new changes occurring this year that I am excited to share with you. Over the summer our team has been working very hard to ensure that we provide our students with a phenomenal instructional program for the 2021 - 2022 school year.  Here are some of the wonderful new things that our students will have access to:

  •  Grades K-2 - Art & Dance
  •  Grades K - 5 - Music
  •  Grades K - 2 & 6-8 ~ Theater
  •  GradesK-8 ~ Physical Education
  •  Grades K-8 ~ Library Services & Programming
  •  Grades 4-5 - Peace Patrol ( Elementary Student Leadership)
  •  Grades 7-8 - Associated Student Body (Secondary Student Leadership)

Our Muir staff is excited about launching 3 new spaces to provide students with new services and supports.  Over the summer our team ideated and came together to be able to prepare for the launch of:

The Student Empowerment Center - The center will be under the direct supervision of Counselor, Leah Edzant.  The center will provide an array of services, that will include: Restorative Practices and Circles Mindfulness Activities, Individual and Group Counseling, Student Leadership, Empowerment and Advocacy (LGBTQIA, Diversity and Inclusion, Peace Patrol, etc.), and much, much more!

The Bi-Literacy Reading Support Center - The center will be under the direction of our Reading Support Teacher, Vacant at this time, to ensure students have access to Spanish literature, Bi-literacy small group support and Bi-literacy Assessments to ensure that students are progressing in the Spanish Language.

The Family and Community Engagement Center - The center will be staffed daily by our Primetime Supervisor, Virginia De La Cruz.   The center will house two key services for our school community.

  • John Muir Association of Parents - The JMAP consists of parents from our community who are dedicated to ensuring that our students have every possible resource at their disposal.  Some of the many ways our JMAP supports our school community is through volunteering, coordinating fundraisers and working alongside us when hosting school-wide events.
  • Primetime - The before and after school program ensures our students have an opportunity to engage in and participate in homework tutoring, activities and academic support before & after-school.

Our team is also focused on ensuring that our students receive a rigorous and supportive instructional program.  As a site we have spent the summer rethinking our Mission and Vision, have developed a new logo, and have attended many Professional Developments to ensure that our academic program is top notch.  This upcoming year, our teachers will be working with consultants and district departments to elevate and enhance the learning experiences for our children.  Here are just a few of the learning opportunities our staff will engage in:

Literacy Acceleration Program - Teachers and Aides  will work with Okapi, a literacy consultant, to increase their knowledge of Biliteracy strategies, progress monitor students and if needed provide literacy interventions in small groups to ensure that our students are meeting and accelerating in literacy.

San Diego County of Education Collaboration - Teachers will collaborate and receive professional development & learning opportunities to refine their lens on the Dual Language Framework

Restorative Practices Training - Throughout the year, our site will work alongside SDUSD’s Restorative Justice Department and the National Conflict Resolution Center to provide Staff and Parents with training on the Restorative Practices & Strategies to ensure that our site provides a Safe, Supportive & Collaborative Culture for ALL students at Muir.

I am so thankful that our school site is able to re-open it's doors to our students and families for the 2021 - 2022 school year. I'd also like to share that our team is excited about the new services and support to our students.  Again, I want to welcome each and everyone of you to the 2021-2022 School Year.  It is with great excitement that I wish you all the best on day one!  Should you have any questions, concerns and/or suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

In Service of Students, Staff and our Families,
